  • What guitar is best suited for you?

Still looking for a guitar to start your guitar lessons? the many years that I have been playing the guitar this must be one of the most frequently asked questions for people starting with guitar lessons. Here are some guidelines on what guitar to choose:

     STYLE OF MUSIC

What style of music do you want to play?

    1.  Do you want to play rock or pop music? (like U2, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Taylor Swift or Selena Gomez etc…)
    2. Do you want to singer-songwriter songs? (like Eagles, John Mayer, Jack Johnson etc…)
    3. Do you want to play classical music or folk music?

If you do choose number one, buy an electric guitar (make sure you do get a good practice amp and the bells and whistles that goes with it, the first time.) If you choose number 2 buy a steel string acoustic guitar. If you choose number 3 buy a classical guitar.

    AGE

If your child wants to learn how to play the guitar (ages 6 to 10) I suggest you buy them a nylon string guitar (classical) which will be easier, in the beginning, to play with. if you go to a music shop in your area they should be able to give you the right size and a good price. I do prefer to send my students to Mars Music in Pretoria or Johannesburg because they give exceptional service and good after-sales service.

    STARTING OUT

If you can lay your hands on somebodies old guitar stored up in the attic somewhere it will be a good start just to see if you really like it and then you can make an investment to buy a new or better guitar.

If you have any questions or what guitar make or type to buy, send me an email and I will be delighted to help you and give good solid advice.
